Permitted poultry: the demand for halal products is growing in Russia and all over the world

August, 15

Soon the production of halal poultry in Russia will increase by 5-6% per year, while the average global growth will be 2-3%. This is the forecast given to the magazine Agroinvestor by Albert Davleev, president of the company and of Agrifood Strategies. «In the world 123 mln t of poultry are produced; the share of halal-certified products is estimated to be 10-15%. This meat is mainly consumed in Muslim countries. In Russia, of the 5 mln t of poultry meat produced annually, the quantity of halal products is 250,000-300,000 t, i.e. about 5-6%,» - he said. Many Russian companies develop their process schemes so that they will allow them to work in compliance with halal requirements. The largest manufacturers of halal broiler chicken meat in our country mentioned by Davleev include Prioskolye.

According to the information provided during the 12th session of the Russian-Arab Business Council, the share of halal food is over USD 1 trln, i.e. 15% of the global food market. According to various data, currently in the world there are about 2 bln Muslims, and about 20 mln Muslims live permanently in Russia. For this reason, the halal market has a huge growth potential.

«Halal-certified products are more expensive than traditional ones, but production costs are higher as well,» - says Davleev. - «They include production certification, changing the production process, in particular, transition from mechanical to manual slaughtering, flow separation, separate packaging with additional certification marks, documents, halal inspectors' services, marketing and distribution,» - specifies the expert.

All large companies in the poultry sector offer halal products. «The presence in the portfolio of standard and halal products gives the brand the chance to occupy more spots on the shelves; moreover, halal products, thanks to their reputation as high-quality products, can provide a certain price premium, although not very high, due to the objective decrease of consumers' income,» - added the expert.
